Fisheries Assistant

Position title: Fisheries Assistant
Department: Fisheries

The Fisheries department is currently seeking an organized and knowledgeable person to fill the role of Fisheries Assistant to the Fisheries Manager. The Fisheries Assistant reports directly to the Fisheries Manager and is responsible for providing administrative and operational support to the daily operation of the fisheries office and respective programs.

QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Preferred college graduate or certificate of an approved secretarial program.

  2. Prior experience working with First Nations is preferred.

  3. Prior experience with secretarial duties and data entry is preferred.

  4. Ability to operate a telephone to answer, screen, record, and forward telephone calls.

  5. Must have tact and exceptional telephone etiquette.

  6. Ability to file all fishery files using the Alpha system and/or electronic system.

  7. Understanding to use a data entry system to enter fisheries information.

  8. Ability to sell ice to fishers when required.

  9. Must have the ability to schedule the general maintenance of all fishery vehicles.

  10. Experience with operating trailers and hauling boats is preferred.

  11. Ability to maintain high level of confidentiality and protect sensitive information.

  12. Must have working knowledge of MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint

  13. Thorough knowledge of general office procedures and proficient in the use of office equipment and technology.

  14. Possess strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to meet various deadlines.

  15. Excellent oral and written communication skills, and attention to detail in composing, typing, and proofing materials.

  17. Must be able to manage multiple competing tasks and demands.

  18. Capability for basic operation of machinery such as industrial ice machine, flat deck vehicle, and forklift (training available)

  19. Must have good interpersonal skills and provides services in a culturally sensitive manner.

  20. Good physical condition to go up and down ladders, shovel snow/ice, and help load fish into totes for transport.

  21. Ability to occasionally work after hours as required during the fishing season.

  22. Experience handling fish and fishing experience is a plus, although not required.

  23. Ability and willingness to participate in basic field programs (e.g., planting, site visits at sloughs) are a plus, although not required.

  24. Additional hours and occasional weekend work may be required during fishing season.

  25. Self-motivated, reliable, and punctual.

  26. Knowledge of and respect for Sts’ailes culture, traditions, and history.

  27. Class 5 Drivers License is required, and ability to travel as needed using work vehicles.

Wage Range: Based on experience and Sts’ailes Salary Grid
Type of Position: Full-Time –this position is subject to a 3-month probationary period and performance evaluation.
